Chickens!

My mom called us last Monday… she was ordering laying hens, and did we want some too?

After a little discussion, we decided to go for it.  I’ve wanted hens for a few years, and this seemed like a great time to go for it.

We spent all week getting ready for them.  Jeff borrowed a tractor, and scraped the old cow manure out of the cow pen.  Then, he built two walls to make a coop in the corner.

Next, we made a nesting box.  (I was too busy helping to build it to take pictures of the process!)

See how the lid is hinged?  That way we can reach in easily to collect the eggs.

There are six nesting boxes.

Jeff has put chicken wire at the sides of the ‘hall’ now, so they can only go in through the door.

Happy chickens!  We are going to make a trough feeder for them, since the feeder they are using is for our meat chickens, coming at the beginning of May!

We’ve gotten 18 eggs, and 19 eggs so far from our 20 chickens.  Pretty good, I’d say!  :)

And on a slightly different note – check out how GREEN Creekside is!!  I love spring green.

  2. Magnificent creek. Totally rockin' coop. I love fresh eggs. When I'm grown up and have a country home, I'm having chickens too.
